Taking a step in the right direction

As a writer for this online lifestyle blog, catered towards college students, I try my best to prepare you for a life post graduation as well. Yes, I know that looks aren’t everything, but there are some words that can’t be taken back with a poor appearance. Lets face it, those chuck-taylor’s you wore with your Al’s Formal Wear tuxedo to your senior prom won’t land you a 6 figure salary during your interview, or help you pick up that lovely lady from the bar.

As of right now the current trend is to have a pair of Wingtips, but I know they are A. Expensive B. Almost impossible to find second hand and C. too loud to truly be versatile. Cap Toe Oxfords are your next best bet.  They are still a little expensive (come on, they’re leather dress shoes, not some Jordans made in china). but don’t fret, these shoes are a worthy investment because they certainly look more professional and are easier to pair with than those black dress shoes you have in the back of your closet. Not that there is anything wrong with the black dress shoe, but lets try to add some more sophistication in your wardrobe. Stores such as Footsmart, Macys, and Urbanoutfitters sell cap toe oxfords for a very reasonable price.

Conquering the land of Fried Food!

On Saturday October 8, I went to the State Fair with an association I’m currently in called FSA. As a group, we all met at UTD and carpooled to the Dart Rail station. There are two special trains that run for specifically to the State Fair so no stops are needed. Around 5, we arrived and turned in our empty Dr. Pepper cans so we only had to pay $5 for admission. There was a TX vs OU game going on this weekend, so I expected the fair to be super crowded, however, by late afternoon, many people had left the fair. Even better, we met up with the FSA from UT. It was smart to go late since it was cool and windy for a change; however it ended up raining when I left.

Walking through one side of the fair

Awaiting me all around the fair was fried food! Since I was with a group, we all shared what we got so everyone got to try out a lot of different fried food. I bought fried vanilla cake balls and fried Snickers. Other things my group had were fried watermelon, funnel cake, Belgium waffles, sausage on a stick, and more.  Overall, I would say everything was delicious – however, quite expensive. Sharing is always a good option when it comes to trying out a lot of food.

Fried and other Delicious Food!

There were also many fun rides to go on; if you’ve never been on the ferris wheel, it’s a memorable experience and a pretty view from above. Other than rides, there were a lot of carnival games across from the food stands. There are huge stuffed animal prizes that everyone wants to have! Although it was a lot of money gone to waste, getting a huge prize would make up for it. My friends won a huge wolf-like puppy and the red angry bird along with the minion from Despicable Me. We also went to the car show when it was sprinkling outside. There were new, shiny cars, but I do not remember the names of them.

Large prizes and the car show

Overall, I would say the State Fair of Texas was a success. It was an enjoyable event even though I didn’t get to see everything I wanted to. It’s good to go with a group or a couple of people, so you can all enjoy the experience together and share food rather than spend a bunch of extra money. Even so, many people who haven’t gone still have a bit over two weeks to still go. I will actually be going again either this weekend or the next for sure.

The Endless Possibilities of a Plain White Tee

Every female college student should invest in a few Hanes v-neck plain white tee’s. The possibilities with this one piece of clothing are endless. They come in a pack of three for about $7, and I assure you, you won’t regret a single penny spent. Here are just some of the ways you can utilize your new plain white tee.

Dress it Up- You can wear your white tee with a high-waisted skirt and a blazer for a job interview or a nice pair of skinny jeans and heels and you’re ready for a night on the town. Or Dress it Down- In a hurry to class or just not in the mood to get ready? Slip on a pair of shorts or some leggings with your tee for a more casual look.

Wear your white tee with a cardigan or a vest, with fun scarves and necklaces, or layer with colored tank tops for a unique style. You can even add a big belt buckle to make a statement.

There are many ways to make your white tee your own. You can start simple by tie dying or splatter painting your shirt- not only is it fun to make with your friends, but it is also fun to wear. You can grab a pair of scissors and make it a cropped tee, or add fringe to the bottom. You can even cut your t-shirt into a scarf. Make a quick trip to Hobby Lobby and add glitter glue, sequins, rhinestones, patches, and all sorts of other things. To make something even more advanced, transform your tee into a dress for the college that you attend by adding ribbon and fabric of your school colors.

The plain white tee is a must have for your college wardrobe. Not only is it affordable but gives you the ability to transform it into whatever you want it to be to match your personality.

Mens Collegiate Essentials: Chinos

Autumn is approaching folks, time to say good-bye to honey dips in daisy dukes,  near triple digit weather, and those late nights galavanting around the city – now we are all back at our collegiate studies or work-force or both, late night study hours, and late night taco bell runs. A good pair of Chinos is as essential as a good pair of dark jeans.  For myself, they are reminiscent of my highschool years, when I was forced to pair them up with a odd color polo. But moving forward, chinos are versatile and essential in mens wardrobe – you can be as casual pairing them with a crisp graphic tee and some canvas shoes, or a dress it up with nice button down with some good wing tips. My general rule for this no matter  what color, or fabric – it’s all about the fit. Personally, I stick with the taper fit. My thighs are full size, but my calves are a little small. Don’t rush trying to get a pair cause its in style, be patient, try on different fits, and stick to ones you genuinely like. A good pair that fit will last you a life time and will prevent you from buying another.

Celebrity Hairstyles- Cheap & Easy

Almost every female college student wakes up with the same thoughts in her head. What am I going to wear today? How am I going to do my make-up? But those are often the easier questions. The hardest part for me, as well as I’m sure many girls, is figuring out what to do with my hair in an effort to make it look different from every other day. Here are 10 easy ways to do your hair that are quick and cheap yet still go great with your personal style as well as all the latest trends.

                                                                   Taylor Swift with Straight Hair

#1- Straight: Everyone loves the classic straight hair look but not every one realizes that you don’t need the expensive products to accomplish it nor do you need to damage your hair. You can buy a hair straightener for as cheap as $15 and budget-friendly hair products at any drugstore including Walgreens and CVS. Some of these products include Treseme’s Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray and Garnier Sleek and Shine Smoothing Milk. Straight hair is perfect to go with your clean, sophisticated look.

Tips to remember- don’t flat iron wet hair, always condition, and don’t forget to use a heat protectant.

New York Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2012

Color blocking of the future headed down the runways inside the Mercedes Benz tents at New York Fashion Week all last week as designers previewed their collections. Designers like Cynthia Rowley, Rag & Bone, and Marc by Marc Jacobs, just to name a few, are keeping the color blocking story alive in their Spring/Summer 2012 collections. Last year the designers gave us something pretty and polite walking down the aisles, with their pastel frocks and bold floral prints, to drive us into Spring and Summer of 2011, but this year we are going for sporty and edgy.
