New York Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2012

Color blocking of the future headed down the runways inside the Mercedes Benz tents at New York Fashion Week all last week as designers previewed their collections. Designers like Cynthia Rowley, Rag & Bone, and Marc by Marc Jacobs, just to name a few, are keeping the color blocking story alive in their Spring/Summer 2012 collections. Last year the designers gave us something pretty and polite walking down the aisles, with their pastel frocks and bold floral prints, to drive us into Spring and Summer of 2011, but this year we are going for sporty and edgy.

The color to watch out for to make a statement, is orange – bright juicy orange. The color orange made its way into color blocking stories as well as full length gowns, business suits, and cropped pants. This is a must have color for your Spring/Summer 2012 wardrobe. We personally drooled over many of the looks that came down the runways during last week’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, but of course on a college budget the Marc Jacobs prices are not always wallet friendly. We have looked to stores like H&M and Forever 21 to help us complete our perfect orange color blocking wardrobe. We got away with finding the perfect orange pieces for under $35! It is important for us as college students to buy pieces that follows the orange color blocking trend but that we can also continue to use into the next season. That is the best rule of thumb to remember while going out with your Fashion Week must haves.

These two pieces from H&M are great examples of things that can translate into the next season. Be bold and go for a bright color trend like orange and make a statement when going to class. Dress up either of these options by adding chunky gold jewelry like stacked bangle bracelets or a bold statement necklace. The great thing about both of these pieces is that they come in under $35 and they can be worn in fall and spring. If you don’t want to be as bold as either of these options the best way to incorporate orange into your wardrobe is with an accessory. Ease into the color by buying a pair of orange flats, orange lucite necklace, or an orange clutch and pair it with a contrasting color like navy. This is a sure way to brighten up your Spring wardrobe for cheap without going overboard on the color orange.
